It’s time to clean your basements, attics, and garages!Sticker-free day! The city's contract with Waste Management allows for pickup of as many unwanted items as you want to put on the curb for pickup on May 21st.
One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Getting your unwanted "junk" out the day before will allow the "recyclers" to have a chance.
Waste Management will bring several trucks to the community to collect all the junk starting at 7:00am. Please get your items out early.
What can I put out for Big Garbage Day pickup?
Items could include davenports, chairs, bicycles, cabinets and other furniture, toys, sporting equipment, building materials, anything you no longer want.
No liquids will be accepted. Latex paint must be either dried out or soaked with kitty litter.
Place paint cans out in plain sight with lids off so the hauler will know that the cans do not contain liquid. (Note: containers of dried latex may also be put out with regular weekly garbage.)
What can't I put out for Big Garbage Day pickup?
- Tires, batteries, paint and other hazardous materials and substances.
- The following appliances will not be picked up: microwaves, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners, hot water heaters, and dishwashers.
How do I get rid of items not allowed on Big Garbage Day?
1. You may call Waste Management at 265-5267 for pickup of tires or batteries ($5.00 each). They will also pick up appliances ($35.00 each).
2. You may also dispose of appliances ($8.00 each) by taking them to the South Central Iowa Landfill at 2496 State Hwy 92, in Winterset. The landfill also accepts hazardous waste by appointment (1-888-603-2739). Visit their website http://www.scilandfill.com for complete information.
3. There are Tire and Household Hazardous Waste Collections Events scheduled in Dallas and Greene Counties this year. Download our Big Garbage Day flier, which includes this year's Collection Event schedule.
