Beginning October, 2008 Dallas County is offering free prescription drug discount cards which may be used by all Dallas County residents, regardless of age, income level, or insurance situation.
All commonly prescribed prescription medications, including pet medications, are eligible for a discount.
The cards are accepted at nearly half of the county 's pharmacies as well as more than 59,000 pharmacies across the U.S., including chains such as Walgreens and Wal-Mart.
They are part of a program provided by the National Association of Counties (NACo).
The program offers an average savings of 20-23% for uninsured and underinsured residents, and even residents with prescription drug coverage can use the card to save on drugs not covered by their health plans.
It is also beneficial to Medicare Part D participants who have a gap in their prescription drug coverage, e.g., the card can be used when a Medicare Part D plan doesn't cover a drug.
For more information, contact the Dallas County Public Health Central Point of Coordination Office at 902 Court Street, Adel, Iowa. Normal business hours are from 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Their telephone number is 515-993-5869.
