Since 2013 the Library board, “Library of Tomorrow” volunteers and staff have been working on bringing a larger, updated, user-friendly space to the community.  After looking into three different options the decision was made to remodel the existing space and add on to the current building.

At the April 14, 2020 City Council meeting, the Library asked to move forward with Phase 1 (the remodeling of the staff area, circulation desk and public computers) as they had enough in Burnett funds to cover the expense and, due to COVID-19, the Library was closed to the public making it the perfect time to move forward.

On May 12, 2020, the City Council considered the bids and awarded the contract to Blue Ribbon Builders for $56,700.00 for the remodel.  Phase 1 was completed in July of 2020.

Due to the bids for Phase 1 coming in at almost half of the projected estimated amount ($120,000.00 estimated), the Council approved proceeding with the bidding process for Phase 2 at the July 14, 2020 City Council meeting.  The Council then considered the bids and awarded the contract to the lowest bidders for a total of $1,196,351.00 at the August 11th City Council meeting.  A groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 20, 2020.

Phase 2 of this project will offer many amenities to the community.  There will be additional public computers, a dedicated teen space, reading areas, a study room and a program/community room. The program/community room will give the library a dedicated area for programs and story times, but also be available to reserve for parties and gatherings.  This space will include a kitchenette, a screen with laptop connections, ground level handicap accessibility, and so much more!

This project is funded by Burnett Library funds, Library Capital Improvement funds, private donations, Carver Grant, Bock Family Foundation Grant, Dallas County Foundation Grant and a portion of LOST.
