Newly Established Board of Appeals Volunteer Opportunity

The City of Dallas Center is currently looking for three citizen volunteers for appointment to the newly established Board of Appeals to hear any appeals to decisions of the Code Enforcement Officer under the Dallas Center Property Maintenance Code.  This Board would meet on an as needed basis.  The mayor would like to appoint members at the December 12, 2019 or January 14, 2020 City Council meeting (subject to approval of the City Council).

At the November 12, 2019 City Council meeting the Council passed Ordinance No. 538.  This ordinance creates a Board of Appeals to the Property Maintenance Code that was adopted by Council in 2011. 

The purpose of this new board is to allow any person who does not agree with a decision of the Code Official to appeal that decision.  Board members should have experience and training to pass on matters pertaining to property maintenance.

Section 111.2 of the Property Maintenance code now states:  The Board of Appeals shall consist of three (3) members appointed by the Mayor, with Council approval, who shall serve staggered and overlapping terms of three years.  Of the members initially appointed to the Board, one shall serve a term of one year, one shall serve a term of two years, and one shall serve a term of three years.  Members of the Board should have experience and training to pass on matters pertaining to property maintenance.  A member shall not hear an appeal in which that member has a personal, professional or financial interest.
