These are large canopy trees that typically reach a diameter-at-breast-height in excess of 25 inches and a height in excess of 50 feet at maturity. To determine the spacing requirement for planting, add the widths of the new tree and the closest tree and divide by 2. For instance, if you are planting a Catalpa (30’ width) beside an Accolade American Elm (40’ width) the two trunks should be (30’ + 40’)/2 = 35 feet apart. The information below (in order) is:
